These birds had teased us all day in front of the hide, showing their beautiful wings in the sun. Perhaps the photo i am most happy with from that day. I do like the Magpies, and i love their colours. They are considered as one of the most intelligent, not only bird, but also animals in the world.

Every four hours or so the Crane 'couple' swapped 'egg-sitting' duty

This of course meant a guaranteed opportunity for a 'flying' Crane shot., what could possibly go wrong?

Too close is the answer to that one.,
The wind was more or less behind us meaning when it came to 'take-off' time he was running straight toward us., and by the time he was airborne., well some of the shots after this one were 'bits of Crane' (wing., leg., etc.)

A magnificent sight., but a handful for my lens!

Big bird., so big eggs of course!

We were told the nest was originally built and occupied by Geese., but they got evicted

When your this big you can more or less do what you want., so why bother building a nest of your own?

Anyway a proud mother here checking everything was 'in order'., and what a spectacular sight she makes!

Coot's are everywhere., and most the year are just 'part of the lakeside' furniture

Come spring time and all of that changes

Fights., posturing., and chasing off virtually anything that comes near their mates., it's a testosterone fuelled festival of aggression and male vitality and it makes for great entertainment

Of course they also become an irresistible 'target' for some fun photography

I'm no Ornithologist (far from it) but I thought a Fulmer was a variation of Gull

Go to the bottom of the class., wrong!

With their stiff wings and that amazing 'tube' like nose they are in fact related to the Albatross!
That's the really enormous (sometime bigger than an eagle) seabird but are not now found in the Northern Atlantic

Apparently fossil remains indicate Albatrosses were once up 'our way' (the Northern Atlantic) but all that remains today are their 'off-shoots' like this beautiful Fulmar

So I suppose you could call him our 'mini Albatross'
