Dear Photographer's

I am a Bittern
So please read carefully...

I am a shy and private bird therefore...

1) Don't expect me to come close to your camera's

2) Don't expect me come into the open curious of your activities

3) Don't expect me to pose openly for photographs

3) And absolutely and in no circumstances expect me to do my famous head on pose 3 metres in front of your camera's!

Please understand it's nothing personal., it's just the way I am!

Yours faithfully
Rebel Bittern x

Bitterns are supposed to be shy and secretive.. right?
Try telling that to this one!

Perfectly aware of our presence he just kept getting closer and closer
The odd pause now and again., a quick check for an 'easy fish catch'., then on he came

Eventually., he was too close for the lenses., and this wasn't a quick look and fly off
Oh no., this was a full investigation!
We could have hand fed him!
If the story sounds unbelievable., I understand.,
Fortunately., we have the pics to prove its all true!!!

Born with wings., but it takes a while for young Bittern's to take to the air

They quickly learn that flapping helps propel themselves across the ground at higher speed (especially 'handy' at feeding time) but it's more 'long hops' than proper flight and is all part of the learning process

Eventually instinct takes over and tells them it's time to 'fly'

It marks a 'coming of age' for the youngster and the beginning of its true independence

We have had a magical few weeks watching this Bittern grow up., so although delighted to see him flying around., we also know it's rapidly coming to that time to wish him a good life and (sadly) farewell

Thanks for looking, comments and faves. Much appreciated!

The RSPB expert who happened to be with us at the time said he'd only seen this once in 27 years
So we were very lucky to get this shot

When it comes to feeding her young the fish already swallowed by the mother (left) is brought back up again to her mouth., and then transferred to the juvenile

The problem with this is that when the juvenile is almost as big as the parent., and has a beak like a dagger., feeding time becomes a very unpleasant (and potentially dangerous) process for the parent

Understandably 'feeds' become less and less regular., and ultimately junior has to take care of himself
