But thou art fire, sacred and hallow'd fire;
And I but earth and clay: should I presume
To wear thy habit, the severe attire
My slender composition might consume.
I am both foul and brittle; much unfit
To deal in holy writ.

Yet I have often seen, by cunning hand
And force of fire, what curious things are made
Of wretched earth. Where once I scorn'd to stand,
That earth is fitted by the fire and trade
Of skilful artists, for the boards of those
Who make the bravest shows.

But since those great ones, be they ne'er so great,
Come from the earth, from whence those vessels come;
So that at once both feeder, dish and meat
Have one beginning and one final summe:
I do not greatly wonder at the sight,
If earth in earth delight.

(from the 17th Century English sacred poet George Herbert, in his poem "The
Priesthood".)

" Then, the final form emerges and begins to harden, still with rough spots...
my pot has reached adolescence.

And now my pot enters a most formative stage as it hardens and as the final finish is added.
Its shape has been determined... its useful capacity as a vessel becomes evident.

Finally, my pot is ready to face its greatest trial, the firing process; just as in life, it faces trial by fire.
The capability of the pot to survive is a witness to every potter's skill.

And again as in life, my pot is transformed by this fiery trial;
it is hardened, changed in appearance, and becomes vibrant
with color... obtaining harmonious beauty and life!"

The Potter's Wheel

When you’re troubled and discouraged
In the darkness of the night
When obstruction clouds your vision
And you just can't see the light.

When life’s trials overcome you
And you have nowhere to turn
When you’ve reached the very bottom
There are lessons you must learn.

For the clay is being molded
It’s been twisted, pulled and tossed
It’s been rolled and it’s been pounded
Till the ego has been lost.

He will put you through the furnace
You’ll be tested to the brim
Your life will be in pieces
Till you give your soul to Him.

From blemish to perfection
His hands will form the clay
This human piece of rubble
Must let God have His way.

When you come to Him all battered
In the form of mortal man
When you cry to Him in mercy
You will find the Potter’s hand.

He will grind you, mold and chisel
The friction you will feel
Till He gently carves and shapes you
Upon the Potter’s wheel.
