Larosterna inca

One of the birds I was most impressed with during my first visit to Peru was the Inca Tern. Since then I have always looked forward to seeing them whenever I visit Peru and this past August was no exception. Our trip kicked off with a nice long session with these beauties south of Lima. This one got all excited and started raising its wings when another bird flew near. The resulting image really jumped out at me as I looked through the hundreds from that morning.

Tangara parzudakii

This Flame-faced Tanager is one of the many species of tanager that we photographed on our recent Peru trip. We spotted this particular one along with two others while walking along a road in the mountains. The birds started out way up in the trees actively feeding and making it very difficult to get photos. Much to our delight this one dropped down from way above us to a small plant below us giving us some great views. As you might imagine the camera shutters were making quite a racket the whole time the bird hung out. What a thrill! Tomorrow I will be heading down to Costa Rica with a great group of photographers and I can’t wait to see what birds will cooperate for us like this tanager did in Peru.

Tangara arthus

One of the birds I really enjoyed from our visit to the mountains on our recent Peru trip was the Golden Tanager. What can I say, I really love yellow birds and with its rich color and bold markings what’s not to like about this lovely tanager other than that it likes to hang out in the canopy making photography a bit of a challenge. We saw this one on our way down from the cloud forest and it didn’t hang around for long so I felt fortunate to get the few shots that I did. It is definitely one that I will be watching out for on future trips.

Pyrrhomyias cinnamomeus

Here is another little bird from our recent Peru trip. This one we encountered several times up in the cloud forest and was generally cooperative allowing for some nice photos. At one point we were even able to watch a pair as they were building a nest. Something about this bird just screams cute to me. Maybe it is those big black eyes that seem so far forward on its tiny head.

Cyanerpes caeruleus

Here is another colorful bird from the first day of our recent Amazon trip. This one is the Purple Honeycreeper and like the Green Honeycreeper they spent a lot of time drinking nectar from the tiny red flowers. By the end of our time at this particular tree we had some nice photos of at least 12 species of birds and that was before lunch! I have to say it was a very nice way to start a trip.
