Compared to the Bee Hummingbird the Cuban Emerald is a giant! The emerald seems to be quite widespread, I think we saw them at every location we visited though it still took me several days before I managed to get a decent photo of one.

I spent a coupe of hours birding around Ft Bend County this morning and was pleased to see a good variety of migrants. This Northern Parula ended up being my best photo opportunity. I’m pretty sure this fellow has set up a territory as he was singing a lot and doing a great job making his presence known.

The Bee Hummingbird was a bit of a surprise for me. I had seen bunches of photos of it before visiting Cuba and thought I had a pretty good idea of what it would look like but I have to say, seeing this little beauty in person revealed that there is more to this bird than I thought. It seems to change color so much with the lighting, more than I have noticed with other hummingbirds. Maybe it’s just in my mind but I have to say this tiny bird really left a big impression!

While walking around Quintana this morning I first heard, then saw this Northern Waterthrush foraging along a ditch. In my efforts to get a photo of him I accidently flushed him into the nearby bushes and thought that was the end of my time with the bird. As luck would have it, the bird quickly came back out to the edge of the brush. I watched for a few minutes as it walked along the branches but there was always something in the way. I had pretty much given up hope on getting a photo when the bird reached a small opening and gave me this wild pose about half a second before it flew off out of sight. I love the way that they seem to be incapable of stopping their tail-pumping.

Seeing this Fernandina’s Flicker was a huge thrill during our visit to Cuba. It was explained to us that this bird is critically endangered. Upon further investigation when I returned home the decline of this species is due to habitat loss. What a terrible loss it would be to no longer have these magnificent birds around.
