We have left Golden Bay and will spend a day or so in Nelson before heading back to Christchurch for the Easter break. After asserting there wouldn't be much colour in the sunset I was rewarded with this scene from Tahunanui Beach at low tide! It is such a privilege to get these views. Enjoy.

Yesterday we went for a 6 and a half hour guided tour of Farewell Spit at the top western end of Golden Bay. It is a protected area with some 32km of sand dunes and some marram grass. The wind was relatively strong leading to lots of lines of drift. The area is home to many birds including Bartailed Godwits. They were however outside the reach of my zoom lens. But these juvenile Variable Oystercatchers were relatively common. An excellent tour to do if you ever get to this part of NZ.HWW.

About a 2km walk up through some cool forest and beside a rushing stream and we came to this lovely waterfall. Handheld with a longer shutter speed to get that creamy effect. The locals were saying how dry the last few weeks have been so I can imagine this would be even more spectacular in spate. As you can see the bush is lush with plenty of epiphytes

Whanganui Inlet ( previously West Haven) is wild and windy with gorgeous cliffs, islands, and rugged bushland. On a windy but warm day with scudding grey clouds.
We saw White faced Blue Heron, Royal Spoonbills, Harrier Hawks, Kingfisher and sundry other little birds including Weka's. None of which I was fast enough to photograph as we were driving along a windy, gravel road.

Today we took the windy, gravel road to the Whanganui Inlet and towards Paturau River, closer to the West Coast at the top of the South Island. This rather derelict jetty had a finely carved and polished bench seat surveying this remote area. The Inlet was large and varied with mainly native bush from the nearby National Park. Happy Bench Monday.
