'Maudlin Masscara', one of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence participating in San Francisco's annual Gay Pride Parade, 2013. The Sisters (sometimes called "Order") of Perpetual Indulgence are activists and self-described 21st century nuns for the gay (GLBT) communities. They are, as one can see in this photo, highly visible gay icons who have used their visibility to advance a host of human rights and liberal issues both within the gay community and mainstream society. The organization started in San Francisco in 1979 now has over 800 members worldwide. San Francisco remains one of the Order's most active chapters.

Sister Maudlin is the alter-ego of Mike Kraemer, a resident of San Francisco and owner of Anvil Hair Salon. Kramer served as "Abbess" (President) of the Order in 2009-10

San Francisco's 'Gay Pride Parade' in support of gay rights and celebrating recent Supreme Court rulings in favor of same-sex marriage.

Same-sex marriage is legal in the U.S. state of California. The state first began issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples on June 16, 2008, as the result of the Supreme Court of California ruling which found that barring same-sex couples from marriage violated the state's constitution. The issuance of those licenses was halted during the period of November 5, 2008 through June 27, 2013 (though existing same-sex marriages continued to be valid) due to the passage of Proposition 8—a state constitutional amendment barring same-sex marriages. The granting of same-sex marriages recommenced following the United States Supreme Court decision in Hollingsworth v. Perry, which restored the effect of a federal district court ruling that overturned Proposition 8 as unconstitutional. On the next day, June 28, 2013, same-sex marriages were able to resume.

The theme of the 43rd annual Gay Pride Parade in San Francisco in 2013 was "Embrace, Encourage, Empower". About 1.5 million spectators lined the parade route on Market Street, the largest crowd ever, to see the more than 200 parade contingents. Participants bore signs and clothing celebrating the US Supreme Court's ruling that cleared the way for same-sex marriages to resume in California.
