The US Navy's "Blue Angels" fly in perfect formation over San Francisco during the city's annual "Fleet Week". Fleet Week brings together the US Navy, Marines Corp and Coast Guard who offer air shows, ship tours, a parade and festivals during the two-day weekend event. The Blue Angels distinctive royal blue jets and their pilots are generally the focus of attention as they do breathtaking stunts over the city at speeds close to 700 mph.
The Blue Angels flight demonstration pilots fly the Boeing F/A-18 Hornet and have been using this aircraft since 1986. The Blue Angels were formed at the end of World War II (April 24, 1946) and are the world's first officially-sanctioned military aerial demonstration team. The team started out flying 3 aircraft in formation, then four, and currently operates 6 aircraft per show. The team is split into "the Diamond" (Blue Angels 1 through 4) and the Opposing Solos (Blue Angels 5 and 6). Most of their display alternates between maneuvers performed by the diamond, and those performed by the solos.
