Some of the greatest names in Jazz perform each summer at Filoli's "Jazz at Filoli" concert series. Normally, there are six Sunday afternoon concerts that start in June and wrap up in September. They take place on the Garden Stage, once a tennis court for the Bourn's and Roth family.

Pictured, on stage to the right, is Flora Purim, a Brazilian jazz singer known mainly for her work in the jazz fusion style. Purim has a rare six octave voice and often drifts from lyrics to wordlessness without ever losing touch with the melody and rhythm.....she is awesome!!

These London Plane Trees at Filoli in Woodside, California are located on the walkway between the Bourn-Roth Mansion and the garden shop. I took this shot in the winter at a time when the leaves had all fallen creating a beautiful dark silhouette of the stump-like branches against an azure sky. The technique of cutting back the heads of main branches each year to promote a more bushy growth of foliage in the Spring is called "pollarding".

Pollarding serves a dual purpose of aesthetic style and practical care. It helps to maintain the tree's size and shape while encouraging dense, vigorous growth. With annual attention, trees can be maintained at a specific height for centuries. The resulting uniformity is especially effective at Filoli, where repetition plays an important role in the landscape's formal design. The trees add a sculptural element to the overall landscape. The large, course leaves of the plane trees emerge in late May or early June. They resemble maple leaves in shape and may measure up to 6 to 8 inches long and 8 to 10 inches wide.
