Modern glassblowing involves three furnaces. The first, which contains a crucible of molten glass, is simply referred to as "the furnace." The second is called the "glory hole", and is used to reheat a piece in between steps of working with it. The final furnace is called the "lehr" or "annealer", and is used to slowly cool the glass, over a period of a few hours to a few days, depending on the size of the pieces.

This glassblowing artist was photographed during a demonstration at the Nourot Glass Studio in the beautiful northern California community of Benicia.

This small 37-acre Redwood grove contains at most a few dozen big trees, but is nonetheless one of the nicest redwood groves in the San Francisco Bay Area. There's a lush carpet of sorrel and ferns, trunks turned copper-colored by lichen, a burbling stream - all the kinds of scenery found in the best redwood groves, just not very much of it.

These magnificant Redwood trees are but a small segment of the Redwood forests that existed when the Portola Expedition traveled through this area in 1769. Through time, other tree species have fallen but the Redwoods remain, aided by their thick, fire and insect resistant bark and their ability to exist in flood plain areas.

A 'gargoyle' that's not used as a waterspout is called a 'grotesque'. These grotesques, overlook passers-by at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk amusement park in Santa Cruz, California. Generally meant to scare off and protect people from any evil or harmful spirits, I suspect that those entering the "Fright Walk", just below, can feel a little more at ease.

In the 34th America's Cup held in August 2013, Team New Zealand won the challenger series (Louis Vuitton Cup) by defeating the Prada Luna Rossa Syndicate.

The hills of Oakland, California on the "East Bay" are seen in the background of this photograph.
