Alice Neel (1900-1984) was an American visual artist, who was known for her portraits depicting friends, family, lovers, poets, artists, and strangers. She was one of the twentieth century’s greatest portrait artists and most radical painters. Neel's early work received limited attention until the 1970s. During the last decades of her life she achieved great success.
