Fluidr / Feather Reed Grass/Karl Foerster (Calamgrostis acutiflora) by Greatest Paka Photography

A herbaceous ornamental perennial grass resulting from a cross between two species native to Europe and Asia. Also called "Karl Foerster Grass", it has clumps of slender, wiry leaves and feathery stalks that create a stunning vertical effect that emerge reddish-brown in early spring and turn a rich golden color in fall on stems that can rise to 5 feet high.

The cultivar name honors Karl Foerster (1874-1970), German nurseryman, who reportedly discovered this plant in the Hamburg Botanical Garden in the 1930s and subsequently introduced it into commerce in 1950. It is reported that he pulled the emergency brake on the train he was riding in order to collect the plant.
