I now find myself on a week’s holiday from work, and, as is often the case when booking time off, any great conditions have been replaced with grey, flat, overcast skies. Feeling somewhat lost with how to spend my day, I’ve turned my attention back to the images I captured on the side of Pen yr Ole Wen last weekend.

This is a two-image panorama of Tryfan’s cousin, Little Tryfan, sitting quietly in its own snowy landscape. Perhaps, in time, this ‘peak’ will grow to rival that of its larger cousin.

The lack of direct sunrise light was a bit tricky, and ideally—much like an image from later in the day—the warm, bright winter light hitting the landscape would have contrasted beautifully with the cool shadowy blues of the Ogwen Valley and the gullies of Y Garn.

Unfortunately, a cloud bank stubbornly held its position above the Glyderau range. That said, there was just enough warmer light glancing off the foreground to tease out some subtle detail in post-processing

The two oak trees standing strong against the snow fall. The tree branches showing their strength and soft snow building up in the crevices of the tree.

Image taken with Nikon D90 and Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 lens @ f/8, ISO 250, shutter 1/200th focal length 16mm - processed in Lightroom Classic.

It was worth getting up early(ish) on Boxing Day this year to catch this inversion. This was the view from the slopes of Worcestershire Beacon looking south along the ridge to Summer Hill, Pinnacle Hill and in the distance Herefordshire Beacon (British Camp Hillfort). Apart from these hills the rest of Worcestershire and Gloucestershire was covered in fog for as far as the eye could see. To the west the whole of Herefordshire was covered right to the border with Wales where the Black Mountains were visible. To the north it was covered up to the Shropshire Hills. Its a morning that will long in the memory.
