Wikipedia:
"The ancient Chumash people of the region may have seen Point Conception as the "Western Gate," through which the souls of the dead could pass between the mortal world and the heavenly paradise of Similaqsa."

I spend quite a bit of time attempting to get a decent shot of local Coyotes. Due to their extremely timid nature, I often come home without anything other than a furry dot out in a huge field. I got lucky and captured these two before they bolted. I believe these are from a spring litter, a third Coyote that I did not see apparently was alarmed by my presence and ran past the two others and they all took off.

These are actually not rocks, but natural Asphalt deposits. On a very hot day you can stand on these and actually leave a slight footprint.
Back in the late 1860's T. Wallace More owned a ranch on the mesa above the cliffs. One of the ranch operations was an Asphalt mine. Supposedly, the first paved streets in San Francisco came from Asphalt mined here.

This is only a bit over a mile from my house...I'll likely spend more time on these rocks in the future.

I left the house today at 5:30AM to hike out to More Mesa beach to shoot the sunrise. As it turned out, excessive cloudiness on the horizon wiped out and color for the sunrise and it was kind of a bust. I did end up with some shots that I'm still processing.
The news of the day is this Cold-air funnel cloud that I was lucky enough to witness. As I was climbing the stairs back up to the bluff top, some walkers asked me if I saw the "Twister"...What!!
"Oh yeah, over there behind the trees" Sure enough I moved over behind the big Eucalyptus trees and there it was large as life. I was about a mile away and was lucky to have changed to my 80-400mm in prep for shooting some of the Bird-life up on the mesa. The whole thing only lasted about 2 minutes as it lost strength over land. I wish I had time to throw on a polarizer. One my contacts, Barry Rowan also got a few shots. Here is another shot from Bo Criss.

The clouds increased through out Friday to the point that I thought it would rain...somewhat rare for So Cal summertime.
At 5:00:01 I flew out the door from work and headed out to the nearest beach. Campus point adjacent to UCSB was only about a mile and a half away. There was plenty of time to scout comps. Once the sky ignited...it was a different story. I was running around like the proverbial Chicken with it's head cut off. I would shoot in one direction, then look over my shoulder and rush off in the other direction. I got a ton of amazing images...more to come!
