We've had yet another soggy old week. Urgh, SO much rain! So much mud!! We crossed paths with a couple of tourists the other day... I knew they were visitors partly cause they had a map out, but also - they were dressed in smart, fairly clean hiking gear, including hiking boots. I felt a bit of a scruff in comparison - plodding slowly along in my totally filthy wellies/rubber boots & battered old raincoat, Flynn beside me, soaked, his harness & fur covered in mud! As we got closer, the tourists shoved the map away & began tiptoeing furtively around the very edge of the field/marsh, trying to avoid getting too mucky. As Flynn & I sloshed past them, going through the worst of the muck because we've learnt trying to avoid it is pretty pointless, I heard the man say to the woman "Well, now we know why all the locals are wearing wellies!". He's not wrong - the locals are (mostly) wearing wellies out in the countryside... heck, even in town, some have clearly just given up & can't be bothered to change to less waterproof footwear even while shopping. One of the small grocers has a sign at their door saying "please remove your muddy boots before entering" - they're apparently happier for people to walk around in SOCKS, rather than stomp mud inside!

Despite the continuing nasty weather, spring has most definitely arrived now. Suddenly everywhere is looking vibrantly green & wildflowers are popping up in all the hedgerows & fields - violets, primroses, forget-me-nots, cowslips, wood anenomes... my favourites - the bluebells - will be out soon too. During a rare, brief dry spell we had on Friday afternoon, I took some pics of Flynn sitting with various flowers but in the end, kept coming back to this one of him just surrounded by green. His expression as he waited expectantly for his snack made me smile (those little teeth!).

This was one of the first hatchlings to pop his or hers head up from the nest. He is 3 days old.

The Great Egret baby or Egretlet, will grow too be a 1 m (3.3 ft) tall.

They grow pretty quickly for large birds, leaving the egret nest in about four weeks and able to fly by about six weeks.

-Ardea alba
