This is a juvenile pied-billed grebe. Pretty cute little guy swimming around the fishing pond at Veteran's Oasis Park in Chandler, Arizona. As it matures, it will lose that tiger striping on its face and will become just a solid color.

Lots of cacti in bloom here in the Sonoran Desert right now. Such amazing colors, IMO. I usually go to parks with my bird lens, so I make it double as a macro for cactus bloom shots.

We did a family outing to the Boyce Thompson Arboretum on Friday. It was a beautiful day and we saw lots of wildlife and blooming cacti. Jasper paused in front of the flowering aloe to take in the scenery of the arboretum. We're pretty sure Jasper had a good time because as we left the gates and headed to the parking lot, Jasper stopped and pulled my wife back towards the park. We gave him the tough news that we were headed home and he reluctantly walked with us back to the car, but not without one more attempt to drag us back into the park. You know. Just in case he wasn't clear the first time.

Jasper went in for his wellness check yesterday. He'll be 13 in July so he's getting up there. The doc checked him over from head to toe. His muscles are still toned, she could feel his ribs and she said he has the teeth of a 2-year-old. His weight was 54 lbs (25.4kg) which is pretty much what he's weighed his whole adult life. Jasper was feeling pretty celebratory last night and insisted on extended play which we happily indulged. I always sit on the chaise lounge part of the wrap-around couch. So Jasper often puts his chin on that part of the couch, offering up one toy or another as you see here with the OddBall.
