In today's busy society we often forget about the simple things in life, which are easily overshadowed by our hectic lifestyles. It could be as simple as taking a drive down to the coast, pulling out some chairs, and enjoying a quiet conversation as the sun sets over the our diverse landscape. It’s all there for us to enjoy - it’s just a matter of actually enjoying it. I came across these two doing just that late one afternoon. They were so caught up in the moment, they didn’t even notice me standing behind them shooting a few frames.
This was my entry into the 2011 New Zealand Geographic Photographic Competition in the Society and Culture category. It didn't make the final, but I'll give it another go next year.

Light trails light up the surrounding landscape as the sun sets behind the Kaikoura Ranges on the South Island of New Zealand. Shot above Island Bay in Wellington, and looking across the Cook Straight to the South Island, this image is one of those that was never really planned. I was there shooting the sunset, but decided to switch lenses & try something a little different. I used a 90mm tilt-shift lens to give the landscape a miniature feel about it, with an exposure time of 45 seconds.

I shot this photo late one afternoon on one of those long, magical summer days. There was a moderate swell running and a light offshore wind blowing a mist of salt air around. The sun was low to the horizon creating this wonderful golden glow as it filtered through the mist, silhouetting in layers the rocky outcrops off Island Bay in Wellington. I shot numerous frames, but this was definitely the best one of the day, capturing a wave just as it was breaking, with spray coming off the top back lit by the sun.
