Boerenzwaluw - Barn Swallow (Hirundo rustica)

Checking the archives, I realized I have been photographing barn swallows from up (very) close on this very same spot for 8 years now.

This year's very cold spring means numbers are still low compared to other years.

Sexton or burying beetle (Nicrophorus vespillo).

'Burying beetles are true to their name - they bury the carcasses of small vertebrates such as birds and rodents as a food source for their larvae. They are unusual among insects in that both the male and female parents take care of the brood. They are carnivores.' [wiki]


NB: a sexton is a person who looks after a church and churchyard, typically acting as bell-ringer and gravedigger. (in Dutch: koster)
