Well it’s that time of year again. The time when the descendents of homo tideswellensis (aka Tideswellman) revert back to type and display the many talents and abilities in overcoming adversity that they have acquired from their ancestors. Genealogists first codified the ‘tidsa’ or ‘tidza’ gene in the 1980s after carrying out blood test for drugs from athletes for the so named ‘Barmy Olympics’ but it is clear that it goes back many generations before that. The most important historical source is the Mummers tale of the ‘Tidza Saw’yed” about a farmer who faced with the predicament of a cow with it’s head stuck in a gate decided to saw it’s head off then call for the doctor who then stitched it back on again.
The gene is most prevalent amongst the inhabitants of the Townhead end of the village who have this year chosen to relive the ‘Barmy Olympics’ but have brought it up to date.
Fencing has some different rules to the traditional Olympic Sport but the equipment is equally specialised.
