I didn't plan to do any HDRs in Gambia, as I didn't think the subjects would suit the technique. However, when I saw the histogram for this one, I thought it would lend itself to a pseudo. So here it is.

"The Gambia's Very Own Beer"

Normally I'm not a fan of lager, but when the temperature soars, a cold one slips down easily. And at 4.8%, it gets you there. Cheers!

As I peer out of the window at the gloomy rain, this seems a lifetime ago.

The sunset wasn't visible from Mandina but it was well worth getting up early for the sunrises.

There are four identical vessels on this route, each in a similar state of festering decrepitude. They each have four engines but only one of the fleet has more than one functional, meaning that the scheduled crossing time of 30-45 minutes can be 2 to 3 hours.

Our return crossing was after dark. Due to a problem with the tide, the incoming ferry couldn't be unloaded, as there was a 1 metre height difference between the ferry and the dock. The resulting time delay meant that one ferry-load of vehicles and two ferry-loads of people boarded. Inside the ferry there were no lights and the crush of bodies brought to mind the infamous Black Hole of Calcutta. I'm quite sure that no one had the faintest clue how many were on board.

The British Foreign & Commonwealth Office advises travellers not to use this ferry, as it's too dangerous. We survived but we'd never do it again. Next time we'll listen to the FCO.
