This was the scene I alluded to on my prior post. The female on the left came down to this perch and quickly flew up a branch and took the small caterpillar and settled back down on this branch to prepare it for her consumption. I had my other eye surveying the scene while I followed her through the view finder. That's how I spotted her mate who came down to the same branch but was only partially visible in the view finder. I borrowed a technique from those who do panos in landscape photography and quickly focused on him and fired a few frames. I stitched two of the images together to get this pano to represent this amazing encounter. He can be seen, beak open, calling, presumably congratulating her on her catch :o).

These images arranged in a composite are from my recent Blue Ridge Parkway workshop. I've included two images of males along with the female. The singing pose shows a typical southern Appalachians male showing some black on the dorsal aspect. The other male shows a dorsal aspect devoid of black which is more typical of birds from the northern part of the range. The southern males also tend to have a more prominent white handkerchief. This eastern warbler shows the largest difference between female and male plumage but all birds except for the most immature females also show a white handkerchief. First fall males if found early enough in that season will sometimes show a white supercillium and a white lower eye arc similar to that found in the female. I find that incredibly interesting.

Using Photoshop I added the female to this image. The female is actually a fall adult female whose plumage is near identical to spring. The male is a likely a first spring male.

Earlier in my stream is the image of the male which was my starting point for this composite.

My goal is to have a 'spring' composite for all of the 37 eastern warblers where there is a difference in male/female plumage. Many of these will appear in my warbler plumage gallery on my website. The gallery is not live yet but the build has begun. It will feature all the eastern warblers and most of their plumages.

Feedback and comments are appreciated! Thanks!!!!

I combined these images with Photoshop. There are 37 eastern warblers and of those who have distinct differences between male and female I am endeavoring to combine them into one image. I have about 5 or 6 more pair sets to complete which will require more field work in subsequent springs. A fun project which I hope will prove useful to many.

Both images were taken last year in Tennessee and combined using Photoshop. One spot left for April 23,24 in Tennessee.
