This species was high on the want list for me this trip to the upper peninsula. It can be found in the lower peninsula but not at the sites I visit there. I encountered a bunch of these singing away. The song is so much different than the similar appearing L0uisiana Waterthrush as is the breeding habitat. It was a lot of fun to spend some time with this species.

Upper peninsula. The Spring male is amongst the most beautiful of all the warblers with perhaps the most dramatic change in plumage come fall.

Upper Peninsula. Boreal Forest. What is a redbud doing there? Every day was sunny and the light was already getting harsh when this cooperative bird was found.

He is singing from a Hawthorn. This is from the lower peninsula but this bird is also found at the UP sites. We have them breeding here in the Georgia mountains also.

This guy was actively vying with a colleague for the same territory. I usually pass on most warbler species when I encounter that but with this species in contrast to others it seems the hypervigilance makes it much easier to perch the bird on a chosen perch. Perhaps this means there are differences in how various warbler species engage in fighting during territorial disputes. This certainly seems to be the case based on my observations. In the lower peninsula areas that I visit I've never seen another birder or photographer. It is my opinion that those types of areas are much preferred for warbler photography when calls are used.
