Note the rufous feathers in the forecrown, an often overlooked finding in adult female trichas, the eastern subspecies. First fall female is the dullest plumage of this species and would be expected to have less yellow in the throat and upper chest. Thus this is likely a fall adult female.

Kennesaw MTN. Atlanta area. 9/20/2017. This is a relatively uncommon warbler for the mountain, encountered only in migration.

Spring migration is just beginning in GA. This is one of my favorite times of the year to be out and photographing, and warblers are my main emphasis for photography this time of year.
The pine makes an unusual background for this lowland species but the green contrasts well against this male's beautiful plumage.

Adult female. A first fall bird would not have such a bright yellow throat. Notice the high contrast in color between the throat and the rest of the undersides of this bird. A first fall male would have obvious black in the mask area by this late fall November date.

The buffy pale eye ring is present in all plumages of this species except for the adult spring male. The first year spring male may be separated from the adult spring male by the presence of such a buffy eye ring.
