After finishing with the B1ackburnian in the previous post I headed back to the area where I had heard the Canada Warblers after making a quick stop for a Chestnu.t-sided Warbler. The light was just coming over the ridge to illuminate the area when I arrived. The perch is a Pinkshell Azalea which is sort of the 'redbud' of this region when it comes to a nice flowery perch to pair a warbler with.

It was a cold and windy morning and I was thankful to find this guy singing in a somewhat wind sheltered area. The background was difficult to work with being an upward slope so the bokeh isn't as smooth as I would like. However I really like the red trillium next to the singing pose. I had a perch set up on both sides of a small group of these trillium and this is the one he chose. I couldn't back up and open up to try to smooth the background and still keep everything sharp as I was close to the road.

From last week's Blue Ridge Parkway/North Carolina Mountains WW workshop--10 species of warblers photographed over 3 days including multiple opportunities with this gorgeous species in various settings. The beautiful azalea is known as Pinkshell Azalea and is endemic to scattered areas throughout the North Carolina highlands including often being prominent in this species breeding grounds.
Pinkshell Azalea has been cultivated and can be found in northern states throughout the East. I was in Central Park NYC this past weekend and I saw one in bloom there. Completely unrelated to this I got to scratch the Ramble in Central Park off my bucket list of places to 'bird'.

08/13/2021. This adult male doesn't breed in the Georiga Mountain location where we found him. This species begins moving south in August in Georgia. The fall plumage for the adult male doesn't show as much black in the cap and the black necklace is somewhat muted compared to Spring. I did a partial background replacement using photoshop to clean up the background. I don't see as many adult males in Fall migration as I do other plumages for this species and this is probably my best detailed image of a Fall adult male. They are a whole lot easier to photograph on breeding grounds in the Spring.

This species is at the top of my list when I get to the Blue Ridge Parkway. This guy was amazing!
