This is a difficult warbler species to age and sex especially in the fall. It is not reliable in that regard to just look at the amount and intensity of the black side striping. This individual however is easy to age and sex. He has a lot of black on his over tail coverts rather than olive. He has black remnants on his olive back and also on his face. He also has a flare of white supercillium remaining. I was delighted to get the chance to photograph this bird. We see a lot of fall Maggies passing south through Georgia but this plumage extreme at close range with open views in favorable light was a special treat.

Upper peninsula. The Spring male is amongst the most beautiful of all the warblers with perhaps the most dramatic change in plumage come fall.

The light was rough but the birds were plentiful. Picked through several of these we located by song until we found this cooperative guy. He had stunning coloration and a solid black on his back without any discernible olive. We placed him on three different flowering perches without much time or effort. It is better to spend more time looking for a 'ripe' bird than trying to work with one not so inclined. We ended up not finding a singing Bay-Breast3d warbler during our time but thought I had one at one point but it ended up being an Am3rican R3dstart singing a similar song. So you always learn something new. Now I know other than listening for the classic sounding Bay-Breast3d I need to be aware of that and also pay closer attention to what sounds like a B1ack-and-Wh1te warbler when in this area. In retrospect I may have missed one thinking it was a B1ack-and-Wh1te. Looking forward to trying again next Spring with more time!

Any flight shots I get of warblers are just a by-product of being in the field and photographing them. They are never planned and most are blurred but occasionally I get one I really like. Maybe some day I will be more purposeful in trying to get these. You need good light and a fast enough shutter speed (this one is on the slow side for an acceptable warbler flight shot) and a favorable direction of launch.
