Piedmont NWR in Georgia. Endangered species. The primary habitat of the RCW has been reduced to 3% of its original area since European settlement centuries ago. This habitat is the longleaf pine ecosystem. The resulting population of RCWs has plummetted 99% from initial estimates. Today in the Southeast there remains approximately 5600 groups of RCWs corresponding to about 14,000 birds.
The RCW is the only North American woodpecker to excavate, roost, and nest in living pine trees. See the glazed appearance of the tree around the nesting hole due to the pine resin.
