Murray Sunset NP | NSW | Australia

This was shot mid-morning at Lake Kenyon - one of the pink Lakes in the Murray Sunset National Park. This area has a rich history of harvesting pink salt throughout the 1900's - especially during war times in order to acquire salt to preserve meat for the troops. It's incredible how much that salt used to be valued during those times. Commercial operations have long since stopped though.

Much of the shore line is littered with footprints from curious travellers, but I was fortunate to find this patch of crusty salt patterns that was completely undisturbed. Getting out and exploring from behind the lens was cathartic for me, helping me come to terms with the passing of a close family member at the time (This was taken last year in May 2019).

During COVID lockdowns it really sinks in that the whole act of landscape photography is just as much about getting out and about and exploring as anything else. Whether I've got some nice frames on the SD card or not at times is really just a bonus.

Hope you are all doing really well.

An old car is laid to rest in a paddock off the Arumpo Road on the way to Mungo National Park. I’m not sure of the exact geo location, but if driving on the road it’s on the Southern side about half way between Mildura and Mungo , about 30 meters in from the fence.

Mungo is such a special place. Just before I took this shot, a family of swallows came flying down past the lunettes and danced in the air around me, chirping merrily. When you go to a place like this, you don't just look at it, you don't even just see it, but you feel it, deep in your spirit. I find it captivating. I hope you too can sense the magic of the place.

A pano from the Lake Mungo "Walls of China".

To fully set the scene for this one - imagine you're standing right in this picture. You're hundreds of miles from anywhere; the air is mild and motionless, and you're enveloped in a complete and utter silence. You've just taken this photo and can feel the last rays of the sun on your face as you contemplate the scene and enjoy the quiet.

Just as you're about to pack up, you hear a noise - a small group of swallows of perhaps half a dozen in number. They race straight down the erosion gully in front of you and fly towards you, putting on a dizzying display as they duck and weave in mid-air figure-8's chirping away merrily, and seemingly at play. After many laps of the lunettes, they all dissapear off into the distance. The sun has now dipped under the horizon, and silence returns to the lunettes.
