Surely these are the petrified remains of dinosaurs?

The rock formations on the BC coast are truly astounding at times.

When they catch the light they really start to come to life.

As a boy I was obsessed with dinosaurs. I would see the likeness of these extinct beasts everywhere I looked and my imagination would conjure all kinds of battles and momentous events.

I guess I'm just a big kid and maybe that's why I seek out places that ignite that sense of awe.

This sea stack on a remote beach of the Gulf Islands immediately got my attention. I spent two hours studying the shape from all angles, trying to solve the puzzle of this fascinating form.

I had low expectations for the light and considered it more of a practice session than anything else. With sea lions barking in the background competing against the growling of my hungry stomach, I was just about to give up and head back to the camper for breakfast when a gap in the clouds opened up.

I was utterly entranced by the way the light made this monster glow, revealing so much texture and movement. I knew that I had minutes at the absolute most so I hurriedly pulled my camera back out of the bag and rushed this quick hand held shot before the gap in the clouds closed a few seconds later.

Knowing that this creature sits in wait for future visits gives me great comfort. I expect I'll return many times to capture 'Petrified Rex' in all his glory.
