Snow Petrel is reputed to breed further south than any other species of bird. They nest on cliffs in pebble-lined nests and lay a single egg which they incubate for up to 49 days. The chick fledges after a further 49 days. They are long-lived birds (c 20 years) and pair for life. We saw small numbers frequently in the coldest Antarctic waters, usually flying round among the icebergs. I liked this shot because it shows the bird in the context of its typical habitat. Its scientific name (Pagodroma nivea) translates as snowy ice-wanderer which is highly appropriate as this species has even been recorded at the South Pole.
