Mary, John and I did part of the 'Sitting with Jane' BookBench trail yesterday. Set up by Wild in Art, to commemorate the 200th year of Jane Austen's death, the colourful bookbenches are all Jane Austen themed and can be found in Basingstoke and its surrounding villages.

This one, 'The Golden Peacock' is one of my favourites.
This spectacular and colourful BookBench celebrates the famous cover of the 1894 edition of Pride and Prejudice, known as the Golden Peacock cover, wrapping peacock feathers around the design and framing it with tropical blossoms.

This colourful BookBench was inspired by Steventon Church and the beauty of the landscape and wildlife that surround it, close to Jane Austen’s birthplace. Here in Old Basing, the wildlife is just as evident and Basing House and the Tythe Barn long pre-date Jane Austen.

Mary, John and I did part of the 'Sitting with Jane' BookBench trail on Friday. Set up by Wild in Art, to commemorate the 200th year of Jane Austen's death, the colourful bookbenches are all Jane Austen themed and can be found in Basingstoke and its surrounding villages.

This BookBench uses a silhouette, very popular in the regency period and Jane’s favourite colour, turquoise, to celebrate her love of dancing and the importance of dancing in her love stories. This is a very special location – St Nicholas’ church is where her father and later her brother, were rector and Jane was born just down the road in a farmhouse long demolished but not forgotten. Jane lived there for 25 of her 41 years. Steventon was very much the cradle of her genius.

The House That Jane Built is a representation of a Regency dolls’ house giving you a glimpse into Jane’s life or a scene from one of her novels, or maybe the Russell family at Goldings, the building behind the BookBench. They made their home here in 1780, and were family friends of the Austens’.

'Look Upon Verdure' is where Jane invites us to pause in our hectic lives, sit on her BookBench and rest our eyes on nature. Here in the village centre, you can imagine Jane coming to shop and post her letters.
