Week 29 in 52 Weeks for Not Dogs

I found this shot so difficult, despite having read a couple of tutorials. Trying to manually focus on the oil was really hard, but auto focus was impossible! The little drops of oil have an attraction for each other and quickly blend into one big blob.

I had another play with oil and water, with only marginally more success. Several shots were spoiled by the logo on the bottom of the glass dish coming into focus when I tried using a smaller aperture. So I need a glass dish with a clear bottom! I tried directing off camera flash at the background, which helped a little but I still had to enhance the colours in processing. Not sure if I should have diffused the flash and I think maybe the background needs to be closer to the dish. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

Another attempt at oil and water photography. I'm still finding focusing almost impossible - I guess it's just my poor vision that's making it so difficult. And the oil drops still have a mind of their own!
