Happy 11th Birthday to my old lady! I bought her a Jolly Ball (something I was meaning to do all last year) and we took it to the park in dreadful weather just to get a birthday photo for the group. The poor light didn't allow me to get a good action shot so I settled for this one - which at least shows that in less than five minutes she has begun to destroy yet another expensive toy.

ATSH #3 - Coffee and tea

How to:
The set up is easy - a plastic bottle with a pin hole in the bottom suspended over the cup. The drips come at fairly regular intervals depending on how much liquid is in the bottle - but timing for the shots is still difficult. The size of the droplet depends on the size of the hole and the viscosity of the liquid. I used a piece of black cartridge paper for the background and put an absorbent cloth under the cup to catch any splashes. Camera on a tripod - to set up the manual focus I use a thin wooden skewer with a small paper clip twisted round it resting on the cup or glass, change it's position until the drip hits the paper clip, then focus on the paper clip. When you take away the skewer the falling drops should (at least some of them) be in focus. Then it is a matter of trial and error to capture a drop or drops in the position you want - I am still experimenting. This is a basic way to get water drop photos, many people use speedlites triggered by electronic timers which respond to motion or sound. Such equipment must make the success rate much better but there is no reason you can't do it with the pop up flash as I do - see under the photo for the settings. I thought at first that the faster the shutter speed the better but that isn't the case, it is the flash that freezes the motion.

I can't go to Builth without getting a photo of the lovely bridge over the Wye. This year I remembered to take my crystal ball to get something a little different. Blue skies would have been nice but after the torrential rain on our arrival I was just glad it was dry!
