Mary and I went back to the aboretum today for another look at the hawfinches. They proved a lot less obliging, plenty flitting fabout rom tree to tree but not stopping long enough for us to get decent shots. This one my best of the day, heavily cropped - they are really just too high up. I now have neck ache!

It was very exciting to spot these hawfinches today. They perch very high in the tall pines and this is cropped as much as possible! Their massive conical bill is used to crack the seeds of hornbeam and cherry. Their song is quiet and subdued and seldom heard.
The hawfinch is not particlarly rare in the UK but is one of the trickiest species to observe so I have to thank Chalto for his tip on what time to see them - we knew where but the time was the key!
