Byland Abbey in the North York Moors National Park. With a length of 330ft and a tall, three-storey elevation, Byland was the most ambitious twelfth century Cistercian church in Europe. Built between 1155 and 1195, the abbey was an important influence in the development of Gothic architecture. It was suppressed in 1538 as part of the dissolution. The site is in the care of English Heritage.

Former crossing keeper's cottage at Cawton Gates, on the abandoned Pilmoor-Malton branch railway. The building is now privately owned. At this point, the line crossed Carr Lane, an unclassified road connecting Stonegrave and Cawton.

The rural, single-track route was built by the York, Newcastle & Berwick Railway. It opened in 1853, and had intermediate stations at Husthwaite (Gate), Coxwold, Ampleforth, Gilling (for Ampleforth College), Hovingham (Spa), Slingsby, Barton-le-Street and Amotherby. Passenger services ceased between Gilling and Malton in 1930 and between Pilmoor and Gilling in 1953. The route closed to all traffic in 1964.

A few hundred yards west of Cawton Gates, there was a junction - Parliamentary Junction - with another single-track line, from Gilling. En route to Pickering, it served Nunnington, Helmsley, Nawton, Kirkbymoorside and Sinnington. Helmsley and Kirkbymoorside were, and still are, two of the Ryedale district's biggest towns.

The bucolic route, built by the North Eastern Railway, opened in stages between 1871 and 1875. It, too, lost its passenger trains in 1953 before shutting completely 11 years later.
