On the Nieuw Amsterdam, mid-ocean, with the skies and the ocean reflecting lots of grey; warm but windy. On the right is the "walking" deck - 3 times around this is 1 mile. This is very helpful, given the excellence and the quantity of food available 24 hours a day. Again, note the calm waters.

Looking down at an mid-ocean depth of 6,000 metres; these are a couple of the lifeboats on the Nieuw Amsterdam; each boat holds >100 passengers and most have twin motors; all are fully enclosed.

First of a series shot on Holland America's Nieuw Amsterdam, during a recent crossing from Florida to Madeira > Spain.
This is sunrise, mid-Atlantic. The ocean really was that calm the entire way.

There is no content here, except: miles of ocean depth; the arrow-straight wash of the twin screws of the Nieuw Amsterdam; the sun dipping into the ocean and flooding the sky with a full colour palette; the soft hiss of the ocean against the side of the ship; the peace that comes at the end of the day at sea.

On the Nieuw Amsterday, mid-ocean. For most of us, the end of a work day might means a long commute, probably in heavy traffic or crowded public transit. And during that time, there's probably not much to look at.
This worker on the ship is between shifts, and look at what he has to relax with: a glorious sunset, a calm ocean, peace and quiet, with the only sounds being the soft hiss of the sea agains the side of the ship. That, and he's practically home!!
