So my 1st experience of photographing the Northern Lights was from a grave site at the Black Church in Iceland. With wind gusts up to 40 mph, I set my tripod low to the ground while hunkered down on the graveyard. I ended up losing my left glove which made the experience all the more memorable. As I reached for the fallen glove, a wind gust carried it away as if were being pulled away from me. Was it freaky and creepy? Oh YES!
The Big Dipper (Ursa Major) is seen over the church, proof positive that my camera was pointing to the north.

If you ever travel to Iceland with a tripod on your backpack, odds are you will very likely end up here. Unofficially called Diamond Beach for obvious reasons, these glacial remnants are thought to be at least 1500 years old. Winter's low light dishes up some awesome light if there is a break in the sky.
If you look closely at the lower part of the ice chunk, you might see Saint Nick himself...or it could be that I've been staring at my computer screen for way too long. Funny, I never noticed the figure hidden in plain sight while devoting time to this light catching iceberg. Happy Holidays!

On this freezing night in early December, Iceland showed us her magic by dazzling the lucky dozen onlookers
here with an emerald light show supreme.
Two shot blend of (1) foreground at ISO 800 x 4 min at f/2.8 and (2) sky at ISO 4000 x 4 seconds at f/2.8. I used my aging Canon 5DIII + Rokinon 14mm f/2.8.

My first morning of photography in Iceland was one I will never forget. Walking a few hundred paces without getting knocked over by intensifying gusty winds felt like an accomplishment in itself. Harsh weather is a great time to get outdoors and behind a tripod...as long as you have some like-minded friends to help dig you out of the snow drifts if need be.
I was blasted by snow all day and night, but I most certainly had a blast!

It seemed no matter where the tripod was placed, Vesturhorn posed majestically every single time. So if I remember, this was 6 or 7 vertical images stitched, then cropped to 86 the undesirable parts.
