An unplanned and different take on the Flickr-popular 'The Potholes' in La Jolla, California. Truly one of the joys of photography for me is coming away with an image that was completely unexpected from what was pre-visualized. With my tripod set up for landscapes, a surfer popped into the scene and immediately became my mid ground and main subjects.

I went to the archives and reworked this image from Bandon Beach in Oregon. I don't go for square comps too often, but I liked the way the haystack on the upper right filled in the corner by going square. All that sits above is more clear sky, so sometimes less is more.

A strong May storm pounded the coast the day before, so this sunset the following day was the silver lining. If you enjoy photographing seascapes, take the time to get here if you can.

McWay Falls near sunset, located along California's central coast. Without much in the sense of drama in the sky, I decided to fill the void in the upper right with some conveniently located overhanging branches. Luck was on my side as high tide rolled in near sunset, so at times the waterfall was flowing directly into the sea.

I shared this beautiful sunset with my wife at Point Lobos State Reserve (Punta de los Lobos Marinos). We were the only ones taking in the show, until we were joined by a curious sea lion who was apparantly scouting out this little cove...perhaps looking for a place to crash for the evening.
