Eating a Big Skate. The skates can grow to 8' & 200lbs in the Salish Sea.
This sea lion would come up from below taking the skate with it out of the air. After a secure bite with its large teeth, the skate would be shaken violently until a piece of it was ripped away. This happened over and over as more manageable 'bite' size hunks were available to be eaten.
A rare visitor to Whatcom County. This egret has been around for a couple of weeks feeding in the same small wet area. Just 45 minutes prior to this video, the egret had just consumed a different rodent with bugs & large worms in between.
It was interesting to watch the feeding behavior between this egret and a nearby Great Blue Heron. In the hour I was watching I did not see the GBHE catch anything with its stand and wait style whereas the egret walked slowly about 100 yards during this time and captured two large rodents, a very large earthworm, a bug of some sort, and other small prey I could not make out.
