Somewhere in this ball of toads is a female! The frenzied action of the males can at times be dangerous to the female causing physical injuries or even preventing her from reaching the water surface for oxygen.

These toads have bumpy skin and parotid glands behind their eyes that produce a milky white, fout-tasting toxin that is a deterrent to potential predators.

They are considered a "candidate species" for listing as threatened or endangered by WDFW.
