Northern Lapwing / vanellus vanellus. Frampton, Lincolnshire. 21/03/24.
'CONFUSED.'
A lot of awesome displaying took place between two Lapwings on/around a raised bank in the flooded field. I don't know if the birds were two males in territorial dispute, or a pair in courtship.
Every so often, one would land and adopt this raised tail posture (record shot), while uttering low, intimate calls, (not the typical 'Peeee-wit'). This suggested the actions of a submissive female to me. However, I also saw them engage in a fierce tussle, both ending up interlocked in the water, beaks open and wings flapping for a second or two.
I've tried some Google research on all this but drawn a blank. Some sources claim the posture as courtship, others claim it as visible threat behaviour, who knows! If you do, please drop a comment below.
