Cueva de los Verdes , the Green Caves is a part of a large lava tunnel system in northern Lanzarote. The caves can only be accessed as part of a guided tour every 20 minutes. In the caves artificial but subtle lighting has been added. This view is at the end of the Tour in the upper gallery. They are just kidding when they say photos of this view are not allowed. Photos are allowed at the end though best to wait until the crowd thins out and the flashes stop popping. The best view is from the left side.

The pool is only about an inch deep but because of the absence of air movement it gives a perfect mirror reflection. Low light conditions like this really demonstrate the benefits of HDR, see the original image in my comment below.

The picture was taken with a Sony A550 with a Sigma 10-20 wide angle zoom at 10mm. Taken on a Tripod. 3 raw images 2EV spacing. Opened in Photoshop first and each image noise reduced with Noiseware Pro and saved as tiffs.

This is a picture of the London Surrey Olympic Test Road Race taken near Box Hill, Surrey UK. The race started at The Mall, London, came down to Box Hill Surrey and did 2 circuits of an 8 mile loop including the climb of Box Hill and then returned to London for the finish. The Olympic Cycling Road race next year will include 9 circuits of the Box Hill loop. There were extensive road closures to test next year’s arrangements. I live on the coast about 40 miles south of here.

The deliberate focus of the picture is on the home favourite Mark Cavendish. He went on to win the race later back in London in a sprint up The Mall.

The camera used was a Sony A550 with a Tamron 28-200 Zoom at 60mm. The image was opened in Camera Raw and 2 additional images were created at =2EV and -2Ev for a “false HDR”. The 3 raw images were opened in Photoshop first and each image noise reduced with Noiseware Pro and saved as tiffs.

The Shot

It was on a rough field called St. Mary's Mead in 1220 AD that Bishop Richard Poore and his brilliant architect Elias de Derham decided to build a new state-of-the-art Gothic style Cathedral to replace the old Norman Cathedral at Old Sarum.

Because they take so many generations to build, almost all other English Cathedrals are a mixture of different architectural styles. However the main body of Salisbury Cathedral which includes the tower and West Front, was completed in a mere 38 years.

The huge Cloister (the largest in England) and the magnificent Chapter House (containing the Magna Carta) were added later. But then in the 14th century the most daring and astonishing addition was made. The tower was raised and on top of it they built the slender soaring spire which we see today, completing the Cathedral 95 years after Elias first started the work.

Considering that at 404 feet (123 metres) Salisbury Cathedral's spire is the tallest medieval structure in the world it is amazing that it is still standing with foundations only four feet deep. Thankfully nature was on Elias's side and the thick bed of gravel that lies beneath the Cathedral supports the building's immense weight.

Salisbury Cathedral’s new font is the culmination of an on-going project initiated 13 years ago. It was consecretated in 2008 by the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Perhaps the most significant addition to the fabric of an English Cathedral in recent years, it has been designed by William Pye, Britain’s most distinguished water sculptor, and is the Cathedral’s first permanent font for over 150 years. Cruciform in shape and with a three metre span to allow total immersion baptism, it is a beautiful green patinated bronze vessel with a Purbeck Freestone plinth and brown patinated bronze grating. The Salisbury Font has been specifically designed to combine both movement and stillness, with living streams of water flowing from its four corners whilst a perfectly smooth, still surface of water reflects the surrounding architecture of the cathedral.

History from the Salisbury Cathedral Website www.salisburycathedral.org.uk

Salisbury Cathedral is very Photographer friendly. There are no restrictions except during services and in the part housing the Magna Carta. Tripods can be freely used provided other visitors are not obstructed. I got there at 9.00 am for people free views.

The picture was taken with a Sony A700 with a Sigma 10-20 wide angle zoom at 10mm. Taken on a Tripod. 3 raw images 2EV spacing. Opened in Photoshop first and each image noise reduced with Noiseware Pro and saved as tiffs.
