Even in the most desolate of places, surprising beauty may be found. Here patches of arctic ice appear intense aquamarine blue probably due to a combination of melting and subterranean springs that bring ground water to the surface. This water freezes in layers causing the formation of thick blue colored ice sheets called Aufeis.
