The Bat | Johan Creten | Bolsward
Bats are intriguing, useful creatures who play a crucial role in the ecosystem by preying on insects. In Asian culture, bats symbolise wealth, luck and a fortunate old age. Here in the West, they represent both dark forces and a positive rescuing strength: take Batman, for instance, or the façades of great cathedrals where bats – in the form of waterspouts – keep demons at bay. Which is wonderfully appropriate to this burned-out church, the Broerekerk. The stairs on the bat’s back invite visitors to ascend – to symbolically conquer the bat, and in doing so, to transcend themselves.

Vleermuizen zijn intrigerende, nuttige dieren die met hun jacht op insecten cruciaal zijn in het ecologisch systeem. De vleermuis staat in de Aziatische cultuur symbool voor rijkdom, geluk en een gezegende ouderdom. Bij ons symboliseert hij zowel duistere krachten als een positieve, reddende kracht, denk aan Batman, of aan de gevels van de grote kathedralen waar hij, in de vorm van waterspuwers, de demonen op afstand houdt. Dat past prachtig bij de afgebrande Broerekerk. De trap op de rug nodigt de bezoeker uit om de vleermuis symbolisch te overwinnen. En… om zichzelf te overstijgen.

Fortuna’s Fountain | Stephan Balkenhol | SNEEK
On top of a golden ball out on the water stands a man holding a horn of plenty. The statue is a reference to Fortuna, the goddess of luck and the patron deity of cities, families and peoples. The overflowing horn symbolises the material prosperity of those lucky enough to come into contact with it. The golden orb, however, rotates ceaselessly on its axis, so that the water – like the currents that bring good fortune – becomes a wild and unpredictable force. The bounty that happens to wash over us at one moment may be taken away by fate, just as quickly as it came. Just look at the history of Sneek.

Op een gouden bol midden in het water staat een man met een Hoorn des Overvloeds. Het beeld verwijst naar Fortuna, de godin van het geluk en de schutsvrouwe van steden, families en volkeren. De overvloeiende hoorn symboliseert de materiële welstand van de gelukkige die ermee in aanraking komt. Maar de gouden bol draait voortdurend om zijn as, zodat het water, net als de toestroom van het fortuin, een onberekenbare, wilde kracht wordt. De overvloed die zich toevallig over ons uitstort, kan ons door het lot even snel weer worden ontnomen. Kijk maar naar de geschiedenis van Sneek.

The Whale | Jennifer Allora & Guillermo Calzadilla | HARLINGEN
Harlingen was once a town dedicated to the whaling industry. Today, we no longer strive to kill these huge, majestic animals, but to save their lives instead. Especially now that, with increasing frequency and for reasons that remain unclear, we are finding them stranded in shallow water. The Harlingen fountain depicts a highly life-like sperm whale. He lays by the South pier as if lost, although from time to time his powerful spout provides a clear sign of life. The Whale fountain illustrates the enormous effects of human activity on all living creatures in the sea.

Ooit stond Harlingen in het teken van de walvisvangst. Tegenwoordig streven wij er niet meer naar om deze grote en grootse dieren te doden, maar juist om ze van de dood te redden. Vooral nu ze om onduidelijke redenen steeds vaker in ondiepe wateren stranden. De fontein van Harlingen is een levensechte potvis. Hij ligt als verdwaald bij de Zuiderpier, maar af en toe verraadt zijn krachtige waterstraal dat hij wel degelijk in leven is. Zo getuigt ‘De Walvis’ van de enorme invloed die de mens heeft op alles wat leeft in de zee.

Flora & Fauna | Shen Yuan | HINDELOOPEN
The fountain of Hindeloopen was inspired by the Tree of Life on the heraldic crest of the city, along with the stag and hind that flank the tree. The tree symbolises both the essential life force and wisdom. It provides the stag and the hind with nourishment. Now beautiful, exotic birds are perching in the tree. Sitting on a large wooden antler that surrounds the tree, you can see them spouting water as they chatter with each other. Are they gossiping about us?

Inspiratiebron voor de fontein van Hindeloopen is de levensboom op het stadswapen, met het hert en de hinde die hem omringen. De boom symboliseert de levensenergie, maar staat ook voor wijsheid. Het hert en de hinde voeden zich hiermee. Nu zetelen prachtige exotische vogels in de boom. Als je op het grote, houten gewei zit dat de boom omringt, zie je hoe ze waterspuwend met elkaar ‘praten’.
