Weather changes quickly in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. But on this late evening in the John Muir Wilderness, the skies painted a welcome signal with calm night winds and a red & orange sunset. And best of all... no rain or hail coming to pelt my tent.

Dark clouds form over the peaks surroundiing 10,500-foot Rose Lake in the John Muir Wilderness. Rose Lake is a mile and some off the John Muir Trail.

Following the John Muir Trail south leads through oustanding backcountry, including Rosemarie Meadow, Marie Lake, and eventually the summit of Selden Pass.

Cheers!

Surrounded by wilderness, days slow. You hear silence and smell pine and heather after it rains. And most of all, you see the creation we all call home.

Clouds form into a vast puzzle of shapes. They rise above razor-sharp mountain peaks. And to announce their presence, they belt out thunder for tens of miles in all directions. And once the storm passes and the wind calms they reveal themselves again. This time as a magical reflection on the stillness of a High Sierra Nevada lake.

I lost track of time here. I really don’t remember when the storm broke. I do remember the pounding my tent took and the flooding in our camp. That I remember! I also remember emerging from my tent and seeing the crest of the Sierra Nevada mountains clearing from the huge storm clouds.

The moments after a large storm passed over the Sierra Nevada Mountains near Mono Pass in the John Muir Wilderness. This photo has a different aspect ratio and treatment than an earlier image I posted to my photo stream.
