User / Michael Carl / Migrating by the Moon
Michael Carl / 601 items
I waited for this fly by. A huge flock of Canadian geese in their classic V formation headed toward the moon. The moon had risen and I stood between them and the moon... I slowly pivoted to the direction I hoped they were moving and was extremely fortunate to get them in formation just under the moon.

For many migrating birds, like these geese, the moon is essential to the timing of their migration as well as to their navigation. A recent study shows that the presence or absence of moonlight also plays a key role in when migratory birds take flight in the autumn.
