Quaking aspen have tons of character in my opinion. The JyM tree has more characters than others ;)
Besides its brilliant fall colors, much of the aspen tree's charming character comes when sunlight flashes against their milky white bark. Add to that the small black scars from lost branches that strongly contrast against the white bark, and in the case of the JyM tree, human names and dates.
Engraving names and dates in trees has been around for a long time. Around the turn of the century (e.g., not 2002), sheepherders grazing their stock in the high Sierra Nevada meadows would etch their name and date in these trees.
