Tonight I was hunkered down in the water at the edge of a swamp photographing Night Herons and Egrets. Sitting chest deep in water (I had on a set of waders) I felt something brush my back. Distractedly, (thinking it was branch from a shrub), I reached behind me to sweep the irritating branch away. I almost crapped my rubber waders when I swept this 1 metre snake out of the bullrushes. For a full minute I was eye to eye with this boy, while he flicked his tongue at my face in contempt.

A couple of weeks ago, sitting waist deep in water (photographing Dunlin on a beach), I suddenly found myself surrounded by a half dozen of these boys!

It appears that global warming blah blah blah, is the pet subject of discussion lately. With virtually no snow and record high temperatures here in southern Ontario, I would like to state for the record that I’m totally in favour. Now any of you tree huggers (with enough intelligence to read this electronic rant) taking exception to my stance, please feel welcomed to do your chant up in Igloosville on a rapidly melting polar icecap. Forgive me, but I digress.

Saturday dawned sunny and bright, so I loaded the Ram (with the Hemi) with camera gear, assorted road kill, camo stuff, and headed off to Long Point were I understood that there was several snowy owls, as well as several hundred cranes residing for the winter. Spotting a couple hundred birds lounging in the Lake Erie marshlands, I with great stealth slammed the door on the Hemi and headed for the ditch. It became apparent upon sitting, that I might have had an inadvertent accidental release somewhere along the way, since I had this “squishy” sensation under my butt. When it began to hiss, I regretted that I had not made a pit stop on the way down. When it moved, I knew that I was in deep poop. Apparently I had plunked my arse down on a 5’ Eastern Fox snake (which looks too damn close to a Rattler). Well at that point I came closer to crapping my drawers than at any other point in my life. As I looked up and down the bank, it became clear to this trained observer that more of Mr. Foxsnake’s kin had the same idea. And my point is?? I have never seen snakes sunning themselves in the middle of January up here in Canada. Halleluiah for global warming.
