brown honeyeater (Lichmera indistincta)
It's small and plain, but its loud voice has been described as "glorious".

Ladies and gentlemen, the Great Roadrunner doing his running thing, although not up to her max speed, I'm sure!

Out to shoot cranes and geese in the late afternoon with the ELCC Mid-week Marauders at Bernardo... just as I was pulling up to the camera club folks, I noted this excellent specimen and arranged my camera gear out of the car window but as soon as I was about to depress the shutter release, the roadrunner spotted the Marauder group and for some reason began to run away! I was lucky to get off the shot!

It’s always fun to see a “Life Bird,” and this one was just 25 minutes from home up in the Sandia foothills… I have been up to the Elena Gallegos twice in the past three days – nice walking, spectacular views, wavy grasses, great air, pinons, juniper and cacti…

Cornell University’s excellent eBird website introduces the Juniper Titmouse thusly, “Possibly the plainest bird in North America—medium gray overall with no patterning. Despite dull plumage it is undeniably cute with a large eye and plain face. Crest is distinctive. Aptly named, they are found in dry juniper woodlands…”

Now, I understand that scientific descriptions need to be clinical, but this does no justice to this medium small bird with the best hairdo I have seen in a while not to mention its excellent song… When I read this description a month ago, I started making plans to go where this bird was. I had a feeling this “plainest bird” was worth seeing and occasionally, I’m right…
