Sam's 2004 debut, “Mercy," has been recognised as one of the best
singer-songwriter discs of the decade. His 2nd album “Pretty World” (2007)
is as good as. His latest album "Cotton" does not fall from the mark either, in my opinion.
Like his role models Prine and Van Zandt, Baker doesn’t have much of a singing voice, but he masters his vocal resources to maximum effect using simple but catchy melodies.

Sam Baker, the Austin-based singer/songwriter, doesn’t make it easy on the listener, often paints a grim picture. He sings of people involved in hopelessly twisted scenarios and disappointing outcomes. In “Juarez," a Texas frat boy in “a blue suede cowboy hat” sits in a Mexican whorehouse; the woman in his lap with “eyes painted like clay except colder” bitches about getting old as the frat boy sings Van Zandt’s “Waiting Around To
Die."
Sam's captivating storytelling kept the audience in Paradiso clinging to
each and every word. His referral to Townes van Zandt is easily understood,
but Sam also stated to be inspired and influenced by Woody Guthrie.
