Wildflowers emerging from the dry, barren desert is a surreal wonder! Unfortunately, this spring may be the last time we will be able to witness and capture this magical beauty! A week ago, the Bureau of Land Management announced that it is opening areas around Factory Butte to off-road OHV use. Within hours of the announcement off-road enthusiasts were putting down fresh tracks across this fragile badlands. These tracks last for decades and the effects of human impact is permanent. If you are passionate about protecting our public land from lasting damages, let your voice be heard! Please send comments via email to jmccarth@blm.gov Every voice counts and every effort matters!

The Grand Canyon is one of my favorite places in the world. It is a land of huge proportions and extremes. I feel so small and insignificant whenever I stand on the rim and gaze across. I feel even smaller when I start hiking into it and realize how vast these distances are. On this particular evening, our workshop group had some amazing light. The sun had already set, but the sky over to the left of us was lit up with colorful clouds that reflected warm colored light into the canyon.

Sometimes you get lucky and the weather Gods bless you with what dreams are made of! We showed up at 3:30AM with our workshop to shoot Milky Way but found the sky completely clouded. Instead of packing out, we waited and, sure enough, by 4AM the sky almost completely cleared. We had a perfect window for the glorious Milky Way. At sunrise, a few clouds still lingered in the east. As the sun began to rise, fog started to fill the canyon. Just as the sun crested the horizon, the entire canyon was filled with fast rolling fog for a few minutes. What a morning!

Happy Friday! There is light at the end of the tunnel! Yeah, ok, that was cheesy. The Subway is one of my favorite places in the Desert Southwest. Everyday, it transforms itself to something different. The light, reflections, occasional waterfalls, and intriguing line and curves of the canyon. It's such a special place that will satisfy anyone's wanderlust.

I'm excited to get back out to Reflection Canyon this week. Even though I've been there numerous times, I've never gotten a good sunset. It's either been completely cloudy or completely clear. When I was there with my workshop group a couple weeks ago, I thought we were going to be clouded in. But then a small hole opened in the clouds and the sky started to light up. We hurried and grabbed a few shots before the light dissipated.
