Riding the horses was one of our favorite things in Mongolia. One of our guides used to be a horse racer. On our last morning, we photographed him riding as the sun was coming up. I love the little details like the breath from the cold air and the dust behind him. And it all lined up when he hit this ray of light coming from the sun! If you look carefully, you can see a bunch of wild horses in the distance. Later on, he went and rounded them up and we got some neat shots of all of them running. Our guide was having so much fun!
Tech specs: 1/1250th sec, f/8, ISO 400, 320mm.

A wet moose calf peeks out above the dwarf birch in Denali National Park. We were fortunate since this was one of the few spots that had any good color. For some unknown reason, the rest of the dwarf birch just lost their leaves without changing color.

One of the most rewarding things of running Action Photo Tours is the communities we are building. Over the years, our Action Photogs have become a tightly knit family. Last year, we started Chicks Who Click to promote and support women's engagement in nature photography. Recently, my dear friend Juan Pons and I created Images In Focus. This is a free educational Youtube channel where we discuss various topics in nature photography in depth.

In today's episode, we discuss the framework to determine the shooting settings when photographing wildlife. Indeed, nailing the shutter speed, aperture, and ISO is absolutely essential for successful wildlife photography. The settings you use will depend on many factors, such as the type of animal you are shooting, the available light, the background, the blur or sharpness effect you are going for, and much more. The thought process needs to become second nature so that you aren't fumbling around with your settings when the perfect wildlife opportunity presents itself.

Join us on Images In Focus and take your photography to a new height!

While on the latter end of the Kepler Track on New Zealand's South Island, we passed by this swamp that had some nice reflections. I made my way through some thick brush down to the edge of the swamp. After a few minutes, a perfect ray of sunlight burst through the forest canopy and lit up this brackish pool, turning it deep red. It was fascinating to photograph!

Even though it's November, there's still a little bit of the Milky Way visible early in the evening. I helped setup this shot for a client using two light panels with different color temperatures. This iconic little tree is located on east end of Zion National Park. If you're ever interested in a night photography outing, just send me an email!
